Read MoreFrom mulled wine to nougat: the Christmas markets in Mallorca offer a delightful festive atmosphere, despite the mild temperatures that characterise the island.
During the Christmas season, Palma dresses up and is illuminated with decorations that evoke the magic of Christmas. The Christmas markets are flourishing on the island, with new stalls added every year, attracting both locals and tourists. This is a perfect opportunity to enjoy Mallorcan Christmas treats, with a wide variety of flavours and traditional sweets. Besides the nougat, the iconic festive treat, there are almonds in different varieties, dry polvorones that melt in your mouth, crespells (traditional Christmas biscuits) and neules, thin wafers that resemble snowflakes. You can also try coca de patata, scented with aniseed, and gingerbread, a fusion of German and Mallorcan tradition. And of course, the mulled wine, so characteristic of Christmas. If you haven’t bought all your gifts yet, you’re sure to find something special in these markets, and you’ll also enjoy the festive atmosphere.
On 19th November at 7:30 pm, Palma city centre will be lit up with beautiful festive decorations that mark the beginning of the Christmas season. To secure a good spot and not miss the spectacle, it is recommended to be at the Paseo del Borne before 5:00 pm.
The Palma Christmas markets will officially open on 25th November, coinciding with Black Friday, which also attracts a large crowd thanks to the big discounts in the shops. The wooden stalls located in Plaça d'Espanya, Plaça Mayor, Las Ramblas, Plaça Porta Pintada, and Vía Roma, will remain open from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm, offering everything from nativity figurines to handicrafts such as jewellery, ceramics, and candles. The festive lights in the centre of Palma will be on display until early January, and the Christmas markets will continue until 6th January, the day when the Three Wise Men parade through the streets of the city.
One of the most emblematic markets of the Christmas season in Mallorca is the Puerto Portals Christmas Market. This market has established itself as a popular meeting place for residents who spend the winter on the island. The wooden stalls, set against a backdrop of gleaming yachts, offer a combination of Christmas sweets from around the world, from German gingerbread to Italian and Asian delicacies, as well as a varied selection of gifts for all tastes. This market will be open from 17th December to 7th January, from 12:00 pm to 9:00 pm, extending its hours until 10:00 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. This market also hosts family activities, such as Christmas decoration workshops, live performances, and festive music that fills the Puerto Portals evenings, creating a warm and welcoming environment that invites you to stroll and enjoy the Christmas spirit.
Another market that deserves special attention is the one held at Pueblo Español in Palma. This venue, with its architecture that includes replicas of Spain's most iconic buildings, creates a particularly cosy and festive atmosphere. In addition to high-quality handicrafts and Christmas decorations, the market stands out as a gathering place where families come together to enjoy local cuisine and share the Christmas spirit. Inselradio, the famous German radio station, is always present offering mulled wine. This market will be open from 1st to 11th December, with an entrance fee of €10 for adults, €2 for children aged 6 to 12, and free for children under 6. The hours will be from 12:00 pm to 11:00 pm. In addition to the food and craft stalls, there are shows for children, making it an ideal destination for families looking to spend a fun and different day out.
The island's villages also join in the Christmas spirit with their own Firàs de Nadal, which often have a special charm. These fairs become gathering points where locals enjoy mulled wine, nougat, and local activities. Some of the most popular Christmas markets in the villages are:
Additionally, there will be Christmas markets in villages such as Petra, Palmanova, Muro, and many more, each with its own magic and traditions. These events are perfect for enjoying the Christmas atmosphere in quieter and more local settings, ideal for families and those seeking an authentic experience. In each of these villages, the essence of Christmas can be felt, with lights and decorations illuminating the streets, traditional music, and an atmosphere where people gather to share special moments.
Christmas in Mallorca is not only special for its markets and wide variety of sweets and handicrafts but also for the warmth of the people and the festive spirit that can be felt in every corner of the island. From the lights that illuminate Palma’s old town to the Christmas fairs in the small villages, there’s something for everyone.
