Felanitx is situated on the south east of Mallorca about 48 km from Palma Airport.
The town dates back to the 13th century, although the area itself has been well known for its pottery and watercolours since the 3rd century. In 1603 the convent St. Augusti was founded, as was the dance Els Cavellets.
Many flock to see this famous dance, which traditionally is all males between the ages of 10 and 13. These days’ girls are allowed to take part. Seven of the youngsters, dressed in white trousers, red tops and green hats dance in a circle, with another child in the centre. The child taking the central part has to wear a dress and wave a handkerchief to the beat of the music. The age group remains the same, but the boys are happy for a girl to be in the middle of the dance.
Felanitx wines and brandy is renowned, much of the produce being exported.
The town is set in lovely countryside, close to the Sanctuary Sant Salvador and Castle Santueri, both sitting on top of hills that provide wonderful views of Mallorca and the sea.
On a Sunday morning there is a market with the reputation of being one of the best on the eastern part of the island. It fills the streets with sales of local pottery, jewelry and fresh produce, as well as clothes and art.
The pottery tends to be on display on the church steps. There is a memorial on the outside of the church to 414 people who lost their lives when a wall collapsed in 1844.
Felanitx has a large range of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants that cater for all tastes, whether you want traditional Spanish fare or something more familiar.
Just a short journey further east takes you to many of the marvelous coves and bays of Mallorca; the east coast has a multitude of hidden gems. There is a coastal path along the east coast, which among many others close to Felanitx, passes through Cala Esmeralda, Cala Ferrera, Cala Mitjana, Cal Marcal, Cala s’Algar, Cala Murada, and Cala Els Domingos. Many of them are small resorts in their own right and you will find facilities for the whole family in most of them.
There are some bays on the east coast that are only accessible by boat, and a trip from one of the other bays will take you to see these, which are often very quiet and tend to have no facilities at all. Some of the boats that make these trips have glass bottoms, which can make the whole experience one to be remembered.
When you are staying in the luxury property you have rented from Balearic Villas, Felanitx and the surrounding areas are worth making the effort to visit, unless of course the property you have chosen from the 800 plus we have on offer is situated there anyway. Then you will be able to enjoy the delights of Felanitx, including the bays, without moving very far at all.
